2. What Data We Collect
When you use FactHeck, we may collect:
- Account information: email address and hashed password when you create an account.
- URLs you submit: links to social media posts submitted for fact-checking.
- Third-party platform data: publicly available post content (text, images, video) fetched from platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube via their public APIs or pages.
- Usage data: server logs including IP addresses, timestamps, and request metadata.
- Marketing attribution: if you arrive via one of our campaign links, we record the campaign parameters in that link (UTM tags and an optional click identifier) and the originating site (the referring website's domain only — never the full page address). This first-touch information is stored in your browser and, if you create an account, saved against it so we can measure which campaigns bring people to FactHeck. We do not buy or combine this with data from third-party ad networks.
3. How We Use Your Data
We use the data we collect to:
- Provide the fact-checking service (analyse posts, extract claims, retrieve evidence, generate verdicts).
- Authenticate your account and maintain your session.
- Cache results to improve performance for repeated queries.
- Measure which marketing campaigns bring people to FactHeck, so we can invest in the ones that work.
- Monitor and improve the service.
4. Third-Party Services
FactHeck integrates with the following third-party services to provide its functionality:
- Social platforms (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube): to retrieve public post content for fact-checking purposes via their public APIs or pages.
- AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google): to analyse content, extract claims, and generate verdicts. Submitted content may be processed by these providers' APIs.
- Search APIs (Brave, Google): to retrieve evidence for claim verification.
5. Data Retention
Cached fact-check results are stored locally and may be retained to avoid redundant processing. Account data is retained for as long as your account exists. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing hello@factheck.com.
6. Data Security
We implement appropriate technical measures to protect your data, including encrypted passwords (bcrypt hashing), secure HTTP-only session cookies, and HTTPS encryption in transit.
7. Your Rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Request deletion of your data.
- Object to or restrict processing of your data.
- Data portability.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@factheck.com or contact our Data Protection Officer at the address below.
8. Cookies & Local Storage
FactHeck uses a single essential session cookie (factheck_session) to maintain your authentication state. We do not use tracking cookies or third-party analytics cookies.
We also use your browser's local storage to remember the marketing campaign you arrived from (see section 2) until you create an account. This is first-party only — it is never shared with third-party ad or analytics networks. You can clear it at any time from your browser settings.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
